Is a Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone a significant improvement over a Yamaha 62?
I currently own a 62 but I’m considering upgrading. I have the option to buy a Mark VI. I play tested the Mark VI and was not all that impressed with it, but my saxophone teacher was telling me that it was a matter of getting used to and that a Mark VI was easily a superior horn. Also what other professional level saxophones are under $5000, new or used?
Man play what you like! Selmers especially the Mark VI are awesome horns. I have a Mark VII and always thought I would much better like a Mark VI. After trying one, I found that I liked the sound my VII made. As far as other horns go I’ve heardthat Yamaha makes an excellent horn. The only good way to know what’s right for you is go somewhere and try as many as you can. You will know immediately what you like and what you don’t like. Don’t buy a horn to get “used” to it just because of the brand name. Good luck man!
